Bank protection, construction of protective dykes and other related facilities in the bakassi peninsula and surrounding areas

Cameroon

Project

The Government of the Republic of Cameroon signed on June 12, 2006, the GREENTREE agreement on the modernization of social infrastructure (health, education and drinking water supply). Within this framework, several facilities have been built.

Unfortunately, global warming and rising sea water levels have led to the intrusion of sea water into the costal areas and the destruction of many facilities. This seawater rise, combined with reckless human behavior, has led to severe marine erosion on the peninsula.

In fact, the general texture of the soil, mainly hydromorphic or sandy, has contributed to the acceleration of the phenomenon of erosion of the coastline. The consequences have been: damages to facilities, shrinking of the area, disruption of existing ecosystems and the spread of water-borne endemics (malaria, cholera, typhoid fever, amoebiasis, etc.).

As this situation hinders human development and also the overall development of this part of Cameroon, rapid action by the Government has become urgent. Thus, within the framework of the control of its maritime borders and their development and in order to avoid further degradation, the Government of Cameroon has launched an engineering design for the protection of the banks, the construction of protective breakwaters and other related developments at Idabato II, Bamusso, Ngosso and Njongassa (Bakassi Peninsula) in the Ndian department of the south-western region of Cameroon.
