The rain-fed agriculture has low yields in Cape Verde, which accentuates poverty in rural areas. During each short rainy season, large quantities of water are discharged directly into the sea without any management to control (mobilization of the water resource, gradual infiltration, and recharge of the groundwater).
Under this context, the Government, aware of this issue, decided to fight against food insecurity by initiating development of 3 watersheds in the Islands of Santo Antão and S. Nicolau.
The works include:
- 90 torrent control dikes;
- 35 catchment dikes;
- 1025 ml of river control walls;
- 2 underground shield equipped with with solar pumping systems;
- 41 reservoirs with capacities up to 1000 m3
- 34 000 ml PEHD pipes for the irrigation networks.
